News 3rd April 2024 Retail property management

The Easter Bank Holiday weekend was a blast at The Hildreds Shopping Centre in Skegness, where Back to the Future’s DeLorean car was the star attraction.

The vehicle, which has been driven by Michael J. Fox and Stephen Spielberg, was the star of the show for  62,500 people who visited The Hildreds in just one day.

Skegness has a resident population of 22,500, so this was a boon for the centre, whose retailers saw average spend increase by around 9.2% over the Easter weekend.

The event was covered with a full report on BBC Look North, which featured Workman’s Steve Andrews, Centre Manager at the New River REIT-owned scheme, playing Back to the Future’s Doc / Dr. Emmett Brown (pictured below).

“When Easter is early, footfall is sometimes low,” said Steve, “but we were very lucky with the weather, which meant lots of people came out to visit from across the country too.”

Indeed, footfall for the week was up by +35.4% week-on-week, and 24.4% year-on-year, with several occupiers reporting their busiest weekend of trading ever.

Social media helped get the word out, with a reach of more than 135,000 on Facebook, an increase of 109%, and the video of the DeLorean leaving the Hildreds on TikTok (below) was seen by 25.6K people in just two days.
