Workman celebrates 30 years in Glasgow with recruitment drive. Having opened in 1992, Workman’s Glasgow office is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
As a well-established and respected employer in the city, Workman employs 70 people. Currently, our Glasgow business is thriving and expanding, prompting the search for new talent.
The Glasgow team, led by Partners, Alec Green and Jim Hallan in Property Management, Brendan Magee and David McLay in Building Consultancy and Michelle Molyneaux, Director, in Credit Control, fosters a vibrant and stimulating work environment. It offers ample training, support, and career development opportunities.
“When I joined Workman, I did not envisage a stay of more than three years. Seventeen years later, it has certainly been the best employment decision I’ve made. Jim Hallan explains: “We have a great group of people. The majority have been able to progress their careers by at least two levels during their time here.”
Delivering property management for flagship locations
The Glasgow office offers comprehensive Property Management and Building Consultancy services to clients throughout Scotland and the north of England.
Our teams have abundant opportunities to engage in significant projects. They collaborate with major clients such as Hammerson, New River, Columbia Threadneedle, USS and Federated Hermes.
Furthermore, we have collaborated with KanAm and Forma Fund, which have made investments in Scotland to establish their new funds.
Our Property Management instructions cover notable office and retail sites, including the Aurora Building in Glasgow, St Andrew’s Square in Edinburgh, and St John’s Shopping Centre in Perth. Additionally, our proactive property management team at Central Retail Park in Falkirk created an urban garden, winning the inaugural Health & Wellbeing prize at Property Week’s 2021 Property Awards.
Instructions extend into the industrial sector. Taken on in September 2020 were 11 industrial estates under management for Stenprop. Additionally, 38 industrial estates under management on behalf of Mileway (formerly Hansteen).
Collaboration on prestigious projects
Over the past decade, the Glasgow Building Consultancy business at Workman has experienced a significant threefold growth. This was in terms of project scale and fee turnover. For example, over the past two years, two £9m new-build student accommodation projects have been brought to completion.
The Glasgow team was responsible for conducting due diligence on retail parks. In total, over 1,000,000 sq. ft were acquired by Columbia Threadneedle. They are now actively providing property management and project management support for these properties.
There is also collaboration on high-profile projects such as Skypark. It offers 560,000 sq. ft of contemporary workspace, with views across the city. Here, our team led the installation of state-of-the-art cycling facilities.
Brendan Magee highlights that the Glasgow team members have ample opportunities to participate in various aspects and disciplines of Building Consultancy. They gain exposure to a wide range of instructions, encompassing approximately 70% project work and 30% professional work. This makes it an attractive opportunity for those seeking new challenges.
Credit control makes the Workman world go round
Workman’s Credit Control department is centralised in Glasgow, serving the entire firm and its offices. Michelle Molyneaux, Director, leads a team of 29 individuals. She joined the firm 20 years ago as its first Credit Controller, playing a pivotal role in establishing central support for arrears management. Previously, Property Managers handled this task independently.
Reflecting on her early days, Michelle recalls having to persuade Property Managers to enlist her skills.“Twenty years ago, when I first started, I’d spend my time emailing and calling PMs to ask them if there was anything I could do to help them. Slowly they realised there was someone there to assist, and here we are 20 years and 28 additional Credit Controllers later – and there is never a dull moment,” Michelle says.
Glasgow: a key location for business
Situated in the heart of Glasgow, Scotland’s biggest city, the Workman offices are well-located for transport links, with a direct train line into London and Glasgow International Airport on the doorstep. Our Glasgow office is in prime position for face-to-face client meetings, a team lunch or after-work socialising, as Covid-restrictions allow.
“Living and working in Glasgow is ideal for me, as Workman presents the opportunity to be involved in and take the lead on national instructions. This affords the chance to travel throughout the UK to service our clients, yet return home to Glasgow,” Jim Hallan says.
According to Invest Glasgow, more than 48,000 businesses (28% of Scottish companies) make their home in the Glasgow city region, supporting 856,000 jobs (34% of Scottish total). Glasgow is the UK’s fourth largest city by population, and Scotland’s largest urban economy, responsible for supporting more than 400,000 jobs, and generating more than £13 billion each year.
An established destination for corporate and real estate investment, the city is endorsed by nearly 40% of FTSE 100-listed companies which have a presence in the prominent business destination, including Aggreko, Weir Group, Clyde Blowers, and Edrington.
