News 21st November 2018 Gold Green Apple Award

Three Workman-managed properties, across different sectors, received ‘Gold Apple’ awards for showcasing environmental and sustainability best practice

Vangarde Retail Park in York, Touchwood Shopping Centre in Solihull and Birmingham Business Park all won ‘Gold Apples’ at the Green Apple Awards this year, presented at the Houses of Parliament on 19 November. The annual awards recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world.

Vangarde awards

Vangarde won a Gold Award for Environmental Best Practice. The award arrives as a result of Vangarde’s efforts to preserve the habitat of the Greater Crested Newt.

In addition, construction of the retail park occurs around the newts’ natural territory. Accordingly, the centre management team works to improve the local environment for the newts.

  • First, constructing tunnels under busy roads that allow the newts to continue to manoeuvre around the site unharmed;
  • Conserving their habitat and enabling the monitoring of their population growth.

Ultimately, the team works with the community to raise awareness of the importance of the species. In turn, they encourage the community’s involvement in conservation work. Conservation efforts on the site are generating a population increase of nearly 50% since the site construction.

Touchwood Shopping Centre in Solihull won a Gold Apple for Environmental Best Practice for retail and wholesale energy reduction. They developed and implemented a formal energy management system for the shopping centre. This is similar to the PaveGen floor installed at the Mercury Mall in Romford, a shopping centre managed by Workman Retail & Leisure.

The Romford shopping centre is believed to be the first in the world to install the fixed kinetic floor that generates off-grid energy from the power of footsteps crossing the entrance to the mall.

Birmingham Business Park was awarded their Gold Award for the Community Cycling Club set up for occupiers of the Park, a great example of occupier and community engagement in delivering sustainability initiatives. Find out more >
