Benedict De Grandis, a Senior Surveyor in the Welcome team, joined as a graduate in 2021. He manages client portfolios, predominantly across the West End and Greenwich.
What do you enjoy the most about being a part of the Welcome team?
It’s the variety for me. Each day brings something new, which keeps things interesting. With my background in environmental science, I’m particularly drawn to the focus on ESG. It’s a hot topic pushed by a lot of landlords and occupiers right now, and I love getting involved.
What brought you to workman in the first place?
Funnily enough, my brother used to work here. Seeing the overlap between real estate and sustainability, it felt like the perfect opportunity for me.
How has your role developed since joining?
Starting on the Workman Graduate Scheme three years ago, I’ve climbed the ladder from building surveyor to senior surveyor. Along the way, I’ve taken on more responsibility, gained deeper insights, and now find myself advising clients more. Building stronger relationships with tenants and managing team members has been quite the journey too.
Three words that capture your experience the best?
Challenging, rewarding, diverse.
What’s a typical day like for you?
It’s all about prioritising. Managing clients’ service charge budgets and ensuring smooth building operations keep me on my toes. Working closely with building managers, I tackle everything from sustainable building renovations to degassing and installing air source heat pumps. No two days are the same.
Looking ahead, how do you see your role developing?
I’ve got my eyes set on more leadership, guiding both clients and the team. Stepping up and taking on more responsibilities.
Any standout moments in your journey here?
Graduating and passing my APC – those were definitely big moments for me.
Beyond the desk, what hobbies do you have, and do they enrich your role?
I enjoy being active. Whether it’s hitting the gym, going for a run, or cycling around town.
I’m a firm believer that healthy body means healthy mind.
Are you involved in any of the employee networks?
I work with the wellbeing team, organising events on for the London office. Recently, we organised a bake sale for International Women’s Day, and Workman matched donations raised. Currently, we’re busy planning the welcome party for the new London office.
Any particular building that holds a special place in your heart?
The Natural History Museum holds a special place in my heart. Fond memories of exploring it as a kid, and recently went back with some colleagues.
