Current Graduate Employee Q & A

Workman 5315 EMMA Paint Final1

Name: Emma

1. Why did you join Workman?

Their industry reputation, client base and opportunities for progression.

2. What do you like about the Firm?

The diverse work load, exposure to interesting and challenging projects, and the opportunity to gain great experience within the commercial building surveying sector.

3. Why surveying?

I chose building surveying because no two days at work are ever the same! I get a good mixture of site visits, surveys, and office based time which means I’m out and about meeting people as much as I’m in the office. I’m also trusted to organise my own time and workload, which makes the job much more rewarding for me.

4. What advice would you give to anyone considering joining the Firm?

Go for it! The type of projects and support you have available are really beneficial to get you through your APC, and the fact that it’s a fairly young team in the office always helps!

5. Favourite moment/time so far at Workman?

I’ve only been with Workman for a couple of months, but I have really enjoyed my time here so far with everyone being very helpful, friendly and welcoming.

Workman 4908 MARTIN Paint Final

Name: Martin

1. Why did you join Workman?

Good reputation for graduate training and as property managers within the industry. The Firm was clearly growing at a good rate and developing more of a presence making it a good time to join the firm.

2. What do you like about the Firm?

It is a large company, but everybody gets on very well, both as teams and as a whole office. It does sound like a cliché but there isn’t any animosity and very much a ‘one team’ approach. There is a good training structure in place that really does help with the APC, both in terms of in-house and external training. You get to deal with numerous different issues within the company and are exposed to all other property professionals.

There are also plenty of sporting opportunities if you want to get involved.

3. Why surveying?

I went to university to study planning initially, however, after sharing modules with the surveyors I quickly realised that it was far more exciting, fast paced and diverse. You get to deal with a much wider array of issues and are not boxed it as you can switch sectors and specialisms within surveying. It’s a well-respected career with plenty of comradery across the profession.

4. What advice would you give to anyone considering joining the Firm?

Be able to multitask and be communicative with all parties as this helps build relationship and makes sure that people are not chasing you. Be organised from day one and learn to file email and documents properly. Also it’s advisable to get to know the people you work with who aren’t based at the same office, like clients, accounts and facilities managers as it makes the job much easier and enjoyable.

5. Favourite moment/time so far at Workman?

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas parties as you get to meet the colleagues from other offices that you speak with day in day out but don’t really get to see often, good to put a face to the name.
